Can't install NodeBox 3 on Ubuntu MATE 16.04

13 replies Last reply

  1. Hey guys... First post here...

I need a little help installing NodeBox 3 on an Ubuntu machine please...

When I follow the instructions for Linux, I get an error message that says "There's no such packets here" basically...

Tried running it in Wine (Windows emulator) I did get the icon, but when I double-click it nothing happens...

    Any ideas please?

    Thank you in advance!

  2. Never mind, fixed it... :)

Turns out I had to choose a different version of Java...

How do you delete a post on here anyway?

I see a delete button, but maybe you don't see that. How did you fix it? Might be useful for other Ubuntu MATE users.

  4. Hey there... Sorry, but I'm not what you would call a Linux power user... I wouldn't even know how to explain the procedure to you... I just found on the internet that other people had had the same problem, and they all said that they had to downgrade java from 1.8 to 1.7 or something... So I followed the instructions blindly pasting command lines I didn't even understand!

By the way, do you guys know about AppImages? I hear it makes it really easy to make universal Linux apps... The same download works in all families of Linux... :)

PS: No Delete Post button here

  5. I see the button, it's called "Close the discussion" right?... But since there are new posts, I'll have to leave it open... ;)

  6. Nanud, Frederik,

I believe the Delete button is only available to staff members. Before joining the staff I did not see the button and could not delete my own posts; after joining the staff the Delete button magically appeared.

This appears to be a feature of the forum discussion software we are using.

  7. If I'm being totally honest, I don't like this feature very much...

Like for example, yesterday I posted a topic about making a visual notation for lambda calculus in NodeBox, but today I learn that I'm not going anywhere with that project if I don't learn about truth tables and combinatory logic first... So I'd like to remove the post, because in it's current state, it's meaningless and a bit embarrassing... :-/

    But I can't!

  8. Hi Nunud,

Yes, it is a tad annoying. Frederik has said he would like to consider using different forum software at some point.

But you really shouldn't feel embarrassed by posting honest questions and ideas. Whatever confuses you is almost certainly confusing other people as well and it's very helpful to get these things out in the open.

As for your post about lamda calculus I found it fascinating! I read up on it to refresh my memory and am thinking about a reply as soon as I have some more time. You may not be able to do exactly what you want using NodeBox, but the effort is bound to lead to something truly interesting.

Actually I wish more people would post their questions and ideas as they occur. We are all learning. Doing it together is much more helpful than perhaps you realize.

    Thanks. Really: thanks!

  9. Well thank you for the encouragements amigo!

I added "a lead" on what I believe is a good starting point for lambda calculus in the other post! ;)

  10. I'm sorry for posting this here John, but since you're staff... My latest post never showed in the forums... I added it two days ago... It was labeled as being "reviewed", but that's a pretty lengthy reviewing process...

Maybe it's because there was a NodeBox file as an attachment, but then again lots of people add those in their messages here... I don't get, but I don't want to open yet another post about a previous one gone missing...

    Something wrong?

  11. Hi Nunud,

That's odd. There is no review process on this forum (that I know of). And as you say, people attach NodeBox files all the time.

There is a known issue with ndbx files, though. Sometimes the forum software doesn't like them. What I always do is zip them before uploading.

Please try zipping your ndbx file and then try posting again.

    Sorry about the bother.

  12. Thanks John... I'll make another post, but this time I'll put it inside a zip! ;)

  13. Nunud,

Haven't seen another post from you. Please let me know if you're still having trouble.

  14. Hey John... I'm around, it's just that the weather is super hot where I live right now, so my brain is on pause! Can't learn anything about programming in this weather! :-)

Plus, Amazon messed up with the delivery of a book I needed to delve deeper into all this stuff...

But I'm around, and I'll be back soon...

    Thanks! :-)
