Often when I start NB by double-clicking a ndbx file (such as test.ndbx attached to my last post) it hangs after displaying the start-progress dialog. I then force-quit it, and try again, and it works every time on the second go! This doesn't always happen, but if the file was saved after a a modest amount of modification it seems to happen most of the time.

Yep. This is a known Nodebox bug. I routinely do the same thing you did: force quit and relaunch. I've gotten used to it, but it is annoying.
This is another one of those rough edges I wish I could sand off. I love Nodebox so much that I just work around this and all the other minor annoyances. But things like this probably stop newbies from even getting to know NodeBox. I really wish we could get these small things fixed.
